How to Play Herd Mentality

Game Overview

Herd Mentality is the family party game about thinking like the udders. Grab a card and read out the question. All players secretly write their answers, trying to guess what the most popular one might be. When everyone’s ready, it’s time to reveal what you’ve written! If your answer is in the majority, you and everyone else with the same answer get a point token. Yipee! If your answer is the only odd-one-out, you get stuck with the Pink Cow!

It takes minutes to learn and there’s enough room for the whole family! Busy parents, moody teenagers, visiting grandparents, big personalities, the quiet thinkers, even the ones who “really hate board games”. The questions are simple, the tricky part is trying to figure out what everyone else will write!

And there’s mooooo-re where that came from. Add to your herd with the Booster Pack, Moovies and Moosic, the Christmas Expansion, or the Digital version for your phone! The same game with all new questions.

Players: 4–20
Ages: 10+
Play time: 20–30 minutes

Setup

  • Choose a player to read the questions (we like to call ’em the Question Wrangler). They’ll read the cards and keep score, but they still get to play.
  • The Question Wrangler writes everyone’s names on the score pad.
  • Place the Pink Cow in the middle of the table where everyone can see it.
  • Now give each player an answer sheet and a pencil.

That’s the setup, done. You’re ready to get mooooving.

Aim

To collect eight cow tokens by matching the majority answer. And watch out for the Pink Cow – you can’t win if you have it!

How to Play

  1. Read the question
The Wrangler picks up a question card and reads it aloud.
  2. Write your answer
Everyone secretly writes an answer on their pads. (Psst – if somebody’s taking a while, the official rules allow the rest of the group to “moo” at them.)
  3. Reveal
Once everyone’s ready, reveal your answers one by one.
  4. Score it
Find the most popular answer, then score the round like this:
    • If your answer matches the majority, you win a cow token.
    • If you were the only player with a unique answer, you take the Pink Cow.
    • If more than one player gave a unique answer, nobody gets the Pink Cow.
    • If the answers are evenly split, nobody scores, and nobody gets the Pink Cow.
  5. Go again!
The Question Wrangler picks a new card, reads a new question, and everyone writes their answer on the new line on the pad. If a player has the Pink Cow – sorry but it’s staying with you ’til someone else writes an odd answer!

The Pink Cow

The Pink Cow really is as mean as it looks. If your answer is the only unique one, it gets offloaded to you. While it’s with you, you can keep winning cow tokens but you can’t win the game.

The only way to get rid of it is for someone else’s answer to be the sole odd one out in a later round.

Winning

The first player to collect eight cow tokens (without holding the Pink Cow!) wins! If more than one person reaches eight tokens in the same round, the target is nine. This keeps going until a player is one cow in the lead — that player is the winner!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

About 20–30 minutes, but rounds are so fast and funny that most people play "just one more." It works as a quick game before dinner or a full evening of laughs. Either way, it's the kind of game that gets everyone talking - even the quiet ones.

That's the beauty of it - it's instant fun with no overthinking required. But "simple" doesn't mean "easy." Trying to predict what the majority will say is surprisingly tricky, and the Pink Cow penalty creates real tension without any stress. The silly moments and shock reveals keep every round feeling fresh.

It's the opposite! It's endlessly replayable because the people ARE the game. There are 200 questions in the box, but the same question produces completely different answers depending on who's playing. Play it with your family on Sunday, then with your friends on Friday - two totally different games.

And if you do want more: there's a Booster Pack (200 extra questions), a Christmas Expansion (100 festive questions), the Moosic & Moovies standalone edition, and a digital version you can play on the big screen. You're not running out any time soon.

It's one of the most inclusive games we make: no trivia knowledge, no reading-speed advantage, no tricky tactics. Your grandma, your ten-year-old, your friend who "doesn't do board games" - everyone's on equal footing. The rules take 30 seconds to explain, and the laughs start immediately.

Just 4. That's it. No need to round up half the street. It's brilliant with a small crew - you'd be amazed how wrong you can be about three people you thought you knew. Add in a few more and the laughs just keep stacking up. Works all the way up to 20 if you're feeling ambitious (or just really popular).

One player reads a question (like "Name the best sauce"), everyone secretly writes an answer, then you all reveal at once. Match the majority, and you win a cow. Be the only odd one out, and you get stuck with the dreaded Pink Cow - a penalty piece that stops you winning until someone else messes up. The first to eight cow tokens wins. It's so easy to learn, you'll be playing in under a minute.

It's basically built for it. Everyone's together, no one wants to read a rulebook, and someone's already had one too many cookies. Herd Mentality takes 2 minutes to learn, gets the whole room laughing, and works whether it's 4 of you or the entire extended family. Grandma included. Especially Grandma, actually - she's weirdly good at it.

There's even a Christmas Expansion with 100 festive questions you can shuffle straight into the base game. Think "most overplayed Christmas song" levels of debate.
